Release the Kraken!!!

Ever since I first saw Kraken rum here in the UK, I was in love.  Normally a whisky man, I was instantly drawn to the branding and advertising of Kraken rum.  It’s dark and mysterious and I was instantly intrigued.  I wasn’t disappointed either when I first tried Kraken Rum…it was amazing.  But that branding, that marketing… it really stuck with me.  As an advertising photographer, I had no choice.  So, I decided to do a personal shoot inspired by The Kraken.

To me Kraken Rum is all about the Kraken, a mythical sea creature said to dwell off of the coasts of Norway and Greenland (I know, they aren’t at all close to each other).  My idea for the shoot was to have a fisherman that has defeated the Kraken after encountering it on the sea.  I had two different types of people in mind for the shot.  One was more modern, a hipster fisherman.  The other was to go more traditional, with an more traditional fisherman.

The images were easy, as I had a pretty clear idea in my head of what I wanted the finished shots to look like.  A content, happy fisherman enjoying his Kraken on the rocks.  He had just encounter and defeated the mythical sea creature, but that wasn’t going to affect him as he is far to modest to brag about it. Instead, he would happily, and quietly, enjoy his rum…with a small reminder of what he had just done in the glass.

Which one is your favourite?  For me, it’s the third one.  It encapsulates everything I wanted the photo to be about.  Our fisherman is enjoying his glass of rum, and probably thinking silently and inwardly about his encounter with The Kraken.

Let me know which is your favourite in the comments below!  😀
