2014 Photographer’s Showreel
2014 has been a great year, not gonna lie. It saw me awarded my Fellowship in January, I finished second in the Photographer of the Year competition for Location Lighting, and I have recently been nominated for Advertising Photographer of the Year (results in January). Besides all the personal plaudits, I have had some great customers in 2014 and produced some exciting and fun work. I decided to take all of these things and put them into a nice, short-ish video. With the video, I wanted to create something that would not only showcase my photography but would also highlight the specific areas in which I am a photographer. Beyond this though, I also wanted to make sure the video was a little different than all the other “slideshows set to music” that you see all over YouTube. Yeah, it’s still essentially a slideshow set to music, but hopefully done a little differently. Have a watch below.
In case you can’t watch the video, or don’t want to bother I will highlight a few of the images below.
Advertising is an area that I am constantly growing and an area that I want to continue to grow. It’s an area that gives me an opportunity to create fun, creative, and compelling images. I had a few different advertising shoots this year, but these two were my favourites for different reasons.
Kidspace was a first for me. I don’t photography children very often and it was an extremely challenging shoot in that we were going to create every image as a composite image. Given the brief, what we wanted to achieve, and the logistics of everything creating composites was the best solution. Kidspace wanted me to create images that showed how fun, different, and unique Kidspace was compared to other kids play areas…and they wanted images that were different to what any other kids play areas were using. Challenge accepted!
The above image is everyone’s favourite image from this shoot when they see it. It’s also the image that has seen me nominated for Advertising Photographer of the Year! Can’t wait till the awards dinner to find out how I do!
As you can see, the Kidspace shoot produced some great, unique images. Everything about the shoot was fun, and I think the finished images show how much fun we had creating these images.
CYW by Urbanz
This is a much more recent shoot and I can’t share a lot of the image yet. But, I can share a few. I have done a shoot for Urbanz every year for the last couple of years and it has been fun watching them grow. This time we wanted to create a range of images for their Sportz range of headphones and Urbanz wanted these images to be different and edgy whilst still showing off the headphones in a sports setting. After much discussion, we decided to do this entire shoot as composite images. This was mostly down to logistics of trying to get all of the various backgrounds and settings. To do them all on location would have required a couple of days just to get to and shoot in the different locations. Instead we spent one day in the studio and I travelled around on other days shooting the background images… and these are some of the results. 😀
There are so many more awesome photos from the Urbanz shoot, but I have to wait a little while to share more. A few of them, not sure which ones yet, will be seen in Tesco’s stores in 2015 on displays for their headphones, so keep an eye out for that! 😀
Bands and Musicians
What I started out doing as a photographer, and still one of the things I love doing most. Providing images for bands and musicians for their PR and promotion is something that just resonates with me…perhaps it’s because I am a failed musician myself, who knows. But, finding out what images best represent a band and their music while giving them something that successfully promotes them is a challenge that I absolutely love undertaking. 2014 was no different in terms of shooting many, many bands and musicians…but these shoots are some of my favourites from the year.
Sorry, I had to leave the badge on this one! Extremely proud that this image won me 2nd place in the Professional Photographer of the Year for Location Lighting!
No year is complete without a few personal projects. I still have a few ongoing, or planned, but personal projects are something that I try to do often…very often! Personal projects give me a chance to explore and try new things…something that you can’t really risk with a commissioned shoot.
As you can see, 2014 was an exciting year for me. Both in terms of personal achievements as well as developing my photography. I feel that I have taken a step in a slightly new direction this year… offering up photography that is still in my style but is a little brighter and a little more commercial. Something that I was known for previously was the darkness of my photography…not necessarily dark concepts, but overall darkness… if that makes any sense! Anyways, this year I made a conscious decision to brighten things up a bit, but keep it true to my style…and I think I achieved that.
