Fashion Styled Band Promotional Photography
It’s been a little while since I worked with the boys from Nicole Jane, but I finally did again a couple of weeks ago. I first met Nicole Jane around 3 or 4 years ago and we had a great shoot and really hit it off…that first shoot produced this image. During that first shoot, the band was looking for images that were very fashion orientated and had the feel of something that you would see in a Dolce and Gabbana ad. This time around the band still wanted photos that had a fashion feel to them, but were looking for a very different look. For this shoot, they wanted something that had a Terry Richardson feel to it… white background and a similar lighting setup. No problem!
In order to get the Terry Richardson look, I needed a completely different approach to how I light my subjects. But, I didn’t want to steal, or completely imitate, the Terry Richardson look. So, after a bit of thinking I figured out what I could do. Ring flash! A ring flash would give the same direct/flat lighting that Terry Richardson is known for, but it would give me something a little more distinct. It also allowed me to add lights to the setup, which helped me give it more “me”.
You can see in the above images that we have a bit of the Terry Richardson look, but it’s different. The ring flash adds a nice catch light to the eye, and isn’t as harsh as the pop up flash. I also added two accent lights either side and behind Dieu here to help maintain my own style a bit. The result, in my opinion, is a cracking image! 😀
When it came time to photograph the band together I did things slightly different. Instead of using the two accents lights like I did for the individual portraits, I opted to just use the ring flash on it’s own. The result was pretty awesome….
This image is probably the most obvious with the Terry Richardson influence. I still tried to put my stamp on it in terms of posing, compositing, and editing. I definitely nailed the Terry Richardson lighting though.
The boys in Nicole Jane were thrilled with the results, as was I. I love being challenged to do something a little different as it helps me grow as a photographer. I like to try and maintain the style that I am known for, but it’s great to be able to expand that style a bit as well. This was a great, and fun shoot.
