Food Photographer – Sumo Sushi Cambridge Mildenhall

I again need to apologise for the lack of updating the blog, I am starting to get caught up with some things and will try to get on the blog train again!!  So, a couple of weeks ago we had a new sushi place open in Mildenhall called Sumo Sushi.  For anyone that doesn’t know where Mildenhall is located, it is off of the A11 between Cambridge and  Bury St. Edmunds.  It’s an ideal place for a sushi restaurant really as we have two American Air Force bases in the area, so even though the town has a relatively small population there is a very big market in the area for sushi.

I went in on the day after the opening to try it out and talk about the food photography that I was going to be doing for them.  The food definitely didn’t disappoint and was probably the best sushi I have had in a long time…well worth the trip if you live around Cambridge or Bury St. Edmunds.  The job of a food photographer is always a little daunting.  Why?  Well, chefs take great pride in the food they produce, and equally in the presentation of their food.  It is my job as a food photographer to ensure that it is captured and presented in a way that makes the customers (or potential customers) want to try and eat it.  I also need to ensure that I capture it in a way that makes the chef and owners proud.  This means that food photographers spend a lot of time photographing each dish.  Move the plate a 1/4″, no…maybe rotate is 2 degrees….let’s move that ginger over 1/2″.  One dish can take up to an hour to get right.  Changing the lighting slightly, maybe the angle of the photo, perhaps in a little closer or just moving things ever so slightly.  But, all this fiddling about is well worth it when you get the shot!

So, I have rambled on enough about how great it is to be a food photographer, you probably want to see the images!!  I will talk a little bit about the lighting I used for these afterwards, but in the meantime enjoy the images and I hope they make you want to try Sumo Sushi.

So there you have my latest food photographer images.  Hope they have wetted your appetite!!  I said I was going to talk a little bit about the lighting here.  The reason is that I have had some people comment on how good my camera must be to have picked up all the little details in the food.  In reality, the camera doesn’t have anything to do with that, that has to do with the lighting.  In food photography it is important to pick up all the little details and texture of the food and the main thing to help you do this is the backlight the food.  What this means is having at least one light lighting the food from behind.  This lights scrapes over the food giving highlights in the higher areas and shadows in the lower areas.  You then use a light from the front to fill these shadows a bit, but keeping the highlights as they are very important in food photography.  As I said earlier, being a food photographer you have to mess around with the lights quite a bit to find that perfect location and brightness for each dish you are photographing…and it does change with different foods.  :D
