Editorial Photographer – September Awards

As an editorial photographer, I love creating a story with my portraits and capturing images that are to be used in advertising, publicity, PR, or for a magazine editorial.  Almost every award that I have won, has come from my editorial photography.  September was no different.  I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed to not receive any Golds for the month of September….cause I didn’t and I am but I think I know why.  Instead, it was still a good month with me receiving 4 Sivers.

My editorial photographer awards for september came in a wide range of categories, but again the overlying theme with my images is that they are editorial photography.  So, here are the 4 Silver’s for the SWPP september competition.

This editorial photo of DJ TDK was taken in the bricklane area of Shoreditch London.  There is this amazing area off of bricklane by the train lines that is just full of graffiti and is probably my favourite area in London to do things as an editorial photographer.  This image won Silver in the monochrome category for the competitions.  I have a colour version of this that I will probably enter into a different category next month.  I think, and again this is just my thoughts on the image, that it got silver for a couple of reasons.  The face isn’t quite in a profile view, and it isn’t quite in a 2/3′s view…it’s kind of in between, and I think that is what kept this image from being a Gold.  If I had had him turn his head in either direction to get either profile or 2/3′s it probably would have been Gold worthy then.

While we are on the subject of DJ TDK, here is another silver award image of him.  This image was also taken in the Shoreditch area of London, though this one wasn’t on bricklane, but actually just next to the Aldgate East tube station.  As an editorial photographer that specialises in environmental stuff, I am always looking out for cool locations like this one.  This location was so perfect that I have used it again very recently (yesterday in fact.)  This editorial image won Silver in the Environmental Portraiture category with the SWPP.  When I saw the score, I knew instantly why it didn’t get a gold….and it’s something very simple that I could have taken care of on the day with a reflector.  There is a very dark shadow under his chin.  I should have lightened that up by using a reflector on the day, and then this would be a Gold award winning image.

Now we move on to my more editorial photographer for music and bands.  This image should be recognized by everyone as one of the competition images. This image won Silver in the family and group portrait category with the SWPP.  In hindsight it should have probably gone into the publicity category, but I don’t think that would have really changed the score.  This is another image that when I saw the score I knew exactly why it wasn’t a gold.  In my mind, this is because of the shadow being cast across the face of the guy holding the carrots.  This is something that I should have noticed when shooting, but it is also something really hard to notice when shooting!!  :D  Either way I am very pleased with the image and not at all upset about it not getting gold as I think I know why it didn’t.  The image was taken in Norwich, but where exactly in Norwich I really couldn’t tell you.  :D

So our last editorial photographer award for the month of September is an older one compared to the others.  This is an image of Winkzy.  This was done at the same time that we did the shoot for his competition images, but this isn’t his competition image.  Though Winkzy hales from Kings Lynn, we did this editorial shoot in Cambridge at the top of the Park Street garage.  This image won Silver in the Contemporary Portrait category.  This image, I honestly couldn’t tell you why it’s not Gold.  I am not saying it’s worthy of Gold, but it’s hard to see instant faults with it like I can with the others.  I think the lighting is spot on, and the composition is good as well.  Perhaps it’s the fact that the background goes right through his head?  I really don’t know.

So there you have our editorial photographer awards for the month of September.  Editorial photography is by far my favourite type of photography to do as you get to create fun and unique images of people that really show who they are.   If you need some editorial images done be sure to get in contact with us and we will walk through everything together.  I am based between Cambridge and Norwich, but London is a 45 minute train journey away and the rest of the UK is just as easily accessible….so no matter where in the UK you are, be sure to get in touch.

Lauriey - Great shots, and congrats on the silvers!! I think it’s a great skill to be able to critique your own work like that.
