April Photography Awards

April I was actually on the ball for a change and submitted a few images to the BPPA monthly competitions with good results!!  I would like to thank again Sam Pepper as all of the award winning images were of him!!  :D

So, on we roll.  Here are the award winning images….

This image (above) is the Gold that I received in the Portraiture Environmental category.  I am well pleased with having achieved a Gold for this image as it was quite a bit of work.  It took a few takes to get the timing of the shot right, with both the lights actually firing!!  This was towards the end of the day of shooting with Sam, and the batteries in the lights were starting to go and taking some time to recycle.  But, we nailed it on this shot and the result is a nice Gold Award for me!

I love this image and am a little surprised it didn’t receive a Gold.  It did, however, get me a Silver in the Fashion category of the BPPA monthly competition.  Looking back at it, I think it didn’t get a Gold probably because of the posing.  I should have had Sam look at the camera instead of above it, and possibly lowering the hat a touch…but those things are my fault and we did get the image I was thinking of….but hindsight is always 20/20 isn’t it?

This image I know exactly why it didn’t get Gold and am not surprised by it at all.  It did though get me a Silver in the Open category of the competitions.  The reason it didn’t get Gold…and least why I think it didn’t?  I needed a second light here.  A second light to the camera left would have made this image awesome.  But, we were on a rather busy street when we did this and I didn’t want to risk drawing attention by properly setting up some lights.  So, we hand held one light and got to work as quickly as possible to not draw any attention to Sam and ourselves.

This is probably my favourite image from the Sam Pepper shoot.  I am not really surprised it didn’t get a Gold as it breaks a LOT of photography rules.  However, it did get a Silver award in the Publicity category.  I think that it is Gold worthy, but again not surprised as I break some rules by using a wide lens very close to the subject causing the distortion on the hands and I used a single light below Sam to get a dark and moody look.  To be honest, I don’t know what I could have done differently to get a Gold whilst keeping the integrity of what I was trying to achieve with the shot…so, with that in mind, I am very happy to have a Silver for this image.

So, there you have it.  My awards for April.  A pretty good month for me I would say as I got 1 Gold award and 3 Silvers.  Not to shabby….just need to get more Golds!!!
